According to a report by LIZ MCARTHUR of C Fax 1070 a Canadian MEGA YACHT MARINA PROJECT CLEARS ENVIRONMENTAL HURDLE in Victoria Britich Columbia:
THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS RELEASED THE RESULTS OF ITS ENVIRONMENTAL SURVEY FOR THE PROPOSED MEGA YACHT MARINA IN VICTORIA’S INNER HARBOUR.
THE DECISION SAYS “The authorities are of the opinion the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects ” AND “the impact on navigation can be mitigated.”
PROJECT DEVELOPER LACHLAN MACLEAN SAYS THERE ARE STILL HURDLES TO CLEAR, BUT HE IS PLEASED WITH THE NEWS.
“Given that they’ve found that it won’t have any significant impact on the environment it allows them to move to the next stage to of considering the approval of the Navigable Waters Permit. Yeah, it’s a stepping stone that we needed to have.”
THE PROJECT HAS INTENSE OPPOSITION FROM LOCAL COMMUNITY GROUPS; MLAs AND MP DENISE SAVOIE WHO HAS BEEN LOBBYING THE MINISTER IN CHARGE TO DENY A NAVIGABLE WATERS PERMIT FOR THE PROJECT.
SAVOIE SAYS SHE IS VERY DISSAPOINTED ABOUT THE DECISION.
“Well, my understanding of how these things work is once the environmental assessment is done, it’s just a baby step towards approval.”
SAVOIE ADDS SHE HAS BEEN IN TOUCH WITH LAWYERS AT ECOJUSTICE TO LOOK AT POSSIBLE LEGAL ACTION IF THE PROJECT IS GIVEN THE GREEN LIGHT.
IN A RELEASE THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SAYS A DECISION ON THE NAVIGABLE WATERS PERMIT WILL BE MADE SHORTLY.
