As the longest day of the year approaches, the nights are getting shorter and shorter in Pietarsaari, Finland, where the team at Nautor’s Swan is busy with a number of important luxury yacht projects.
Just last week, lamination of the pure carbon hull of the first superyacht Swan 115 S was completed and entered Nautor’s state of the art Boatbuilding Technology Centre (BTC) to start the next phase of the build process. There are currently three flagship Swan 115s (two FD Flush-Deck and one in the S semi-raised saloon configuration) in various stages of production. An impressive feat for the Finnish yard, having just launched the innovative design of the Swan 115 less than six months ago.
Meanwhile, the first luxury yacht Swan 105 RS ever to be built by Nautor is in the very final stages and is ready to undergo important sea trials. This pure cruising semi-custom yacht will set sail from Nautor in a few short weeks time and will be presented at the Monaco Yacht Show in late September.
One of Nautor’s most successful models of all time is the 90 S (example is charter yacht Alix), perfect for bluewater high-performance cruising. The eleventh of which, is also in its final stages of preparation before being delivered to its owner.
A few weeks ago, the first Swan 60 headed to Asia left Pietarsaari to compete with its Chinese owner in the Nord Stream Race as part of the Gazprom Swan 60 Class circuit. Meanwhile, another Swan 60 is under construction at Nautor’s BTC, with expected completion in autumn.
“We are very excited to have just launched the Swan 105 RS, a break-through in design and a revolutionary semi-custom, high performance cruiser built to Nautor’s standards. It is a great pleasure to have another happy owner join the ClubSwan family,” said Enrico Chieffi, CEO of Nautor’s Swan.
The activity at Oy Nautor AB hasn’t been limited to boat construction, as this week the team hosted an international group of 20 journalists, TV crews and photographers from Europe, China and the United States. The visit included in-depth tours of all the production plants and testing facilities, a sail on a Swan 90 and a taste of Finnish traditions, such as a visit to the Arctic Museum in Pietarsaari and insight into the heritage of shipbuilding in the region.
The media were able to see firsthand why Nautor’s Swan stands out amongst its competitors as a “full service” yacht builder, with exceptional in-house knowledge and self-sufficient design process. Unlike any other competitor, the yard has its own joinery where the interiors are produced to match each client’s specifications – from the sleek minimalist to the most classic. The work carried out at Oy Nautor Ab covers all elements of design and construction – from the composite/structural engineering, to the deck layout and sail handling design, interior layout and styling, systems and hydraulics, HVAC engineering, electrical and electronics.
The historical plant in Kållby is dedicated to plug and mould fabrication and the lamination of all Swan hulls, using one of the most advanced, fully computerized milling machines to perfectly shape the moulds. The Kållby plant also includes an indoor water facility to test certain Swans prior to delivery in the cold winter months. The third plant in Kronoby is where highly skilled carpenters build the magnificent wood interiors by hand – a unique feature of all Swans yachts.
