Pendennis hosted its annual awards afternoon in recognition of the significant achievements of its apprentices. The Pendennis Annual Apprentice Awards saw 50 certificates presented, which included NVQs Level 2 and 3, City and Guilds Technical certificates and RYA sailing qualifications handed out by George Moore, commodore of Pendennis shipyard’s sailing club.
The 1st Year Surface Finisher of the Year was awarded to Bryce Wakeham, and the Apprentice of the Year Awards (for 2009-2010 academic year) were presented to Matt Angove from Year 1, Sam Parsons in Year 2 and Zak Keast from Year 4
Mike Carr, managing director of Pendennis, said: ‘The young people on our apprenticeship course have worked extremely hard this year and are a credit to the scheme, providing a valuable addition to Pendennis’ extensive internal trades teams. The quality of skills applied from this course continues to enhance Pendennis’ superyacht build and refit expertise.’
Since 1998 Pendennis have seen over 100 young people from the local area enrol in their general apprenticeship scheme. The four year course consists of a first year at Cornwall College gaining grounding in all aspects of yacht manufacture and maintenance. The apprentices then spend the next three years at the yard in their chosen trade gaining qualifications and experience. On successful completion of their apprenticeships, the apprentices often choose to take up positions within the Pendennis yard and become valued members of staff.
Pendennis runs two apprenticeship schemes; the general apprenticeship scheme has an intake every two years in August and provides experience and qualifications throughout the company. The surface-finishing scheme is a specialist three-year course consisting of on the job training combined with classroom sessions Pendennis has also begun a post apprenticeship course aimed at fast tracking apprentices with management potential.
