Porto Cervo, Sardinia, Italy. 3rd September 2011. The 56-metre yacht Panthalassa claimed victory today in the second race of the Perini Navi Cup 2011 and now sits in third place overall behind Parsifal II in second place and The Maltese Falcon yacht in first. Organized by the Yacht Costa Smeralda from 1st to 4th September, the event sees 13 spectacular sailing yachts from the renowned Perini Navi Shipyard.
“Our intention was to sail a nice clean race and we were very fortunate that we made no mistakes,” commented Greg Butler Davis, Captain of Panthalassa. “We were waiting for the breeze to fill in from the south east for a long time. We were tactically very good at the top mark and managed to perform particularly well. Thanks to great work from our tactician Andrea Visentini we were able to predict and take advantage of the wind that filled in along the coast and get the very best out of the boat.”
A westerly breeze of approximately 13 knots accompanied the participating yachts at the starting line but would later shift and fall towards the end of the race. The fleet followed a course of approximately 24 miles which took them north to round Monaci island before heading to the Secca Tre Monti rock and past Capo Ferro. The Perini Navi yachts then sailed south to Mortoriotto and turned for the finish line off Porto Cervo.
The third and final day of racing will take place tomorrow followed by the prize giving in Piazza Azzurra and the Quadrivio Sgr Regatta Party.
The varied social programme will continue this evening with the Rolex Owner’s Dinner at the YCCS Clubhouse.
