To help the victims of Tropical Cyclone Evan devastated Fiji Islands, the luxury expedition yacht Big Fish arrived in Lautoka main wharf on Viti Levu at about 8.10 am, on the 31st of December, fully loaded with supplies arriving from Auckland, New Zealand. The relief effort was accepted with gratitude by The Commissioner Western Division Fiji – Colonel Joeli Cawaki and witnessed by Director General for Red Cross Mr Filipe Nainoca and members of the local media. DISMAC, along with the support of Yacht Partners Fiji, coordinated a successful clearance and handover.
Distribution Analysis
It is undeniable that conflicts arise within settlements and communities during distribution stages. So in an effort to curb this whilst simultaneously maintaining strict transparency and accountability measures, the head of DISMAC Western Division- Commissioner West Col Joeli Cawaki and other government affiliates agreed earlier this year that all donations pertaining to TC Evans to be subjected to the DISMAC team.
DISMAC is Fiji’s National Emergency Operation Centre. DISMAC is charged with the overall survey and logistics to ensure a smooth and fair distribution of aid supplies. According to survey statistics, the worst hit centres were in the Western Division and minimal to no damage in other areas around Fiji.
Aid Distribution:
24 boxes of Medical Supplies, 24 bags of two paper hand towels and 23 boxes of hand towel handed over by Yacht Partners under and witnessed by the head of DISMAC logistics Captain Vakadrano to the Medical Divisional Officer Western Division- Doctor Luisa. The Lautoka general hospital is in the process of analyzing the physical condition of all Health centers in the division. With the right reports handed over to their individual heads of department supplies will then be distributed accordingly.
Yacht partners also distributed stationeries and books to the Principal Education Officer Western division – Mr. Albert Wise. General reports collected by his office:
Most schools are down and definitely school within the Western Division will no longer begin on the national date 21st of January, 2013.
As briefed by the Divisional Education Officer Western Division – Most school damages range from a $100,000.00 – $400,000.00 bracket. These damaged schools include Primary, Secondary and a total of 19 kindergartens. After much discussion with Yacht Partners and DISMAC officials – the distribution of Generators have been kept aside to serve Maritime Secondary schools severely damaged. In this respect the UN would be erecting easy build buildings in some instances to try and allow some smaller populated schools to commence. 129 bags of clothes have been divided by evenly i.e. all girls, boys, bed linen, towels, babies clothing, women’s and men’s bags have been divided evenly and shared to the Lautoka Divisional officer’s distribution center and the Nadi district offices distribution center. All clothes will be shared according to stats and data received by DISMAC officials on established genuine victims and distributed as quickly as possible. All acquittals as established by the Commissioners Officer will be forwarded to Yacht Partners.
Ideally, we would like all items to be delivered at once but it is critical that the remaining items be held until further analytical reports are tendered for final distribution. However, water and dried food will be distributed soon to Maritime islands.
