With only a few sailing dhows around, the 60m Van Geest Design luxury yacht is truly a unique vessel and an exciting project to develop. The dhow is to express the romantic image of the Middle East, a seducing vision on its waters with a superyacht quality build and a simple lifestyle on board.
A sailing dhow already creates a romantic feeling, as it is unique in its kind. Responding to the design brief requesting to create a folly in the centre of a royal garden, the designers have created a ‘flower’, folding side hull panels, that unfold, once the aft hull doors open. This exceptional feature allows the client to decide whether to have full privacy or full surrounding visibility. The area between the two deckhouses boasts two Spa Pools and represents and oasis in the minimalist and sand-coloured deck.
General arrangements of the new luxury sailing dhow by Van Geest Design provides two separate areas. The aft area is entirely dedicated to the family as well as guests, and the forward part is completely dedicated to the crew. This unique layout is crucial in creating maximum privacy on this one-of-a-kind vessel.
Exterior areas
Starting forward the yacht’s tender can be lifted out on the recess in the deck, which can be converted into a dining/lounge area. On top of the main deckhouse a seating area can be found, together with the external control station for the yacht. Directly aft of the main deckhouse is a large cockpit. This can be used for dining or simply as another lounge area. In between the cockpit and the aft deckhouse is the private owner’s cockpit with secluded seating looking forward and interacting with the interior. There is also a seating area looking aft, open to the yacht’s surroundings.
Interior
As the exterior of the 60m Van Geest dhow yacht is simple and straight forward, the designers have created the same simplicity inside. Although the interior is modern, it still has all the characteristics of the classic past.
Sail Plan
An interesting part of the 60m Dhow by Van Geest is the sail plan, developed in collaboration with Formula Marine, designed to be easy to use and push-button-controlled. It was quite obvious that tracking is not that straight forward. To do this, the mizzen sails have to drop first, before the main boom can cross over. The intention is for the sails to be furl in the booms and roll out when necessary. With a traditional sail plan, applying modern design and technology, the owner will be able to tack a dhow.
Being low, the 60m Van Geest luxury sailing dhow, will assure to catch any breeze of air, the awnings will create a maximum of shaded areas and the sails will give stability when under sail.
