November 9 saw the announcement of Sembawang of Singapore – Global Project Underwriters that it was going to push ahead with its plans for Wavebreak. This represents a $4.9 billion cruise ship and integrated tourism, residential and retail development on the Australia‘s Gold Coast.
However, President and CEO Ric Grosvenor said the company would not be participating in the Queensland State Government’s Expression Of Interest process.
Mr Grosvenor said instead Sembawang would proceed with its plans through the Planning and Environment Court and the Federal legislative process.
“We will not be part of the State Government process, but feel confident we can move this world class development forward through other channels,” he said.
“The State Government says a casino is a consideration now and that has rekindled our enthusiasm for it as without such a revenue generator it will not work.
“We will take each step forward slowly and meticulously and we won’t be part of the PPP process that the State is running.”
Mr Grosvenor said Sembawang intended to address all statutory requirements regarding the development of new, currently unallocated land for Wavebreak.
“Sembawang would like to categorically assure the people of the Gold Coast and Queensland that it never asked for, or expected, any state land to be simply given away for the Wavebreak proposal,” said Mr Grosvenor.
“The project team is ready to lodge a comprehensive suite of applications for the currently unallocated land atop which Wavebreak would be built, adjacent to the existing man-made island in the Broadwater,” he said.
“Sembawang has done everything by the book up to date and will undertake all future plans with the same approach.
