In the best tradition of Swedish design, Stockholm‘s marine village Marinstaden is elegant and refined. From the green rooftop terraces to the engineering wonders of the SF Marina docks, these floating houses are marvellous.
Marinstaden is located near city center in the scenic Nacka Strand district. SF Marina‘s Swedish sales company, SF Pontona, and other contractors recently took over the project from a previous developer. They have since added three floating homes to three existing structures. Eventually there will be a neighborhood of 61 houses connected by two floating streets.
Each house floats on its own custom-made, 6′ high SF1800 docks connected to the street, complete with sewage and electricity connections. The 452 sq. ft. large Marin villa is secured to four 33′ x 39′ docks. The duplex Marin villa, consisting of two 460 sq. ft. houses, is on ten 40′ x 60′ SF1800s. A 16-unit apartment complex will float on a single 60′ x 197′ platform. Capable of supporting cars, the T-shaped floating streets are constructed from 3′ high docks, in 197′ x 26′ and 262′ x 26’ sections anchored to the sea floor.
Buoyed by a Styrofoam core, SF Marina docks are virtually unsinkable and have a service life of up to 80 years. Inexpensive and maintenance-free concrete stands up to saltwater and extreme temperatures. Bolts and joints are made of acid-proof stainless steel and hot-dipped galvanized steel.
Striking Marinstaden houses feature the clean lines of Scandinavian design. Panoramic views of The Venice of the North, expansive porches, a scenic promenade and convenient docking make these ideal homes. “It’s a fun and challenging project,” said SF Pontona’s Peter Santesson. “The families living there just love it.”
SF Marina Systems has been designing concrete floating structures for over 90 years. Their continued research and development has led to an evolution in the technology, providing larger floating breakwaters and better concrete float designs.
