Sparkman_&_Stephens (S&S) have developed a new 75 meter (246-foot) Bermuda rigged schooner. The design stemmed from the thought process of a previous client, who wanted a 56m three-masted schooner.
The 75m Bermuda rigged schooner Sparkman & Stephens have designed will feature a layout accommodating 10 guests in 5 staterooms. The master suite is located aft, with a dedicated staircase leading down from the private main deck office and lounge. Two of the staterooms are fitted with queen berths and two cabins have a convertible bed configuration that can change from queens to twin’s beds. A hidden crew entrance, leading from the lazarette, enables the cabins to be serviced without disturbing the owner or guests. Forward of the engine room, the yacht is dedicated to crew spaces. Berthing for twelve crewmembers is divided between three split decks, which also include service facilities.
The 75m Bermuda rigged schooner boasts large deckhouse windows in the full beam main salon providing lenty of natural light and fantastic views. Leading further aft, there is a seating area and guest office to port and a private owner’s office to starboard. There is a small service pantry located at the aft for crew convenience when dining al fresco on the main deck. In addition to al fresco dining on the main deck, there is also a dining area located on the flybridge deck with outdoor cooking facilities. There is space for tender and water sports storage aft on the flybridge. Additional tender storage is located in the lazarette.
The two -tier engine room which houses the diesel-electric propulsion system, along with the rest of the ship’s machinery is located amidships. The electronic components are located in a dedicated control room which has 270 degree views of the machinery space. All systems can be centrally monitored and managed from this climate controlled and soundproof space.
Sparkman & Stephens president and chief designer Bruce Johnson, noted, “From the very beginning of each project, by working with the project manager or build captain, we dedicate a lot of time to the design of the system and machinery spaces. Not only is the crew happier on a yacht that can be easily maintained, but the owner is as well, because it minimizes downtime which can affect personal vacations or charter revenue.”
A typical objective of all Sparkman & Stephens designs is the hull designed for optimal seaworthy performance. The new 75m Bermuda rigged schooner features a typical Canoe-body shape representative of current ideology in cruising yachts and appendage shape has been focused on reducing wetted surface area. The yacht’s under body has been fitted with a spade rudder and the keel with a daggerboard. As explained by Bruce Johnson “While we maintain the elegance and beauty of a classic gentleman’s yacht above the water, we strive to design efficient underbody shapes to maintain performance in all sailing conditions”.
Sparkman & Stephens have not revealed whether the client who requested the design has chosen a shipyard so it is thought that thte prject is still in its early stages. It appears that the client may be considering a few different hull colours. Besides the grey hull shown here, other options are red and a beige and blue.
