Supermaxi Esimit Europa 2 completed the course in just 23 hours 09 seconds, 5 hours 6 seconds outside the course record.
At a dockside ceremony at the Yacht Club San Remo, Igor Simcic’s was presented with a Rolex Chronometer and the Trophy René Levainville for being first monohull yacht across the finish line, as well as with the Peppe Croce Trophy for the first boat rounding the Giraglia Rock. A very happy Igor Simcic’s expresses his feelings about this win: “I heard about the Giraglia race a long time ago when I was young, because my uncle was the skipper of the very famous boat Helisara owned by Maestro Herbert von Karajan and he won many times the Giraglia.
Two years ago we did the Giraglia Race with a smaller boat, a 65 foot boat and became second. Today we are first and we are happy to be first, because it was not so easy in the beginning, we had some technical problems in 29 to 30 knots but later on everything worked fine.“
Neville Crichton, former owner of Esimit Europa 2, came in second at 12h15m19s CEST with Shockwave. The mini-maxi rounded the Giraglia Rock three hours behind Esimit Europa 2.
The countdown clock is now running for the overall corrected-time victory.
The prize giving for 2010 Giraglia Rolex Cup will be held at 13.00 CEST on Saturday, 19 June at the Yacht Club San Remo.
