The respected South African builder, Southern Wind, successfully launched and christened its first unit of the brand new SW 102 DS, the sailing yacht Almagores II on Sunday May 6 in Cape Town. Developed by Nauta Design and Farr Yacht Design, the Almagores II superyacht is a spectacular performance cruiser, incorporating the evolution as well as the synthesis of those traits, which have set the supremacy of the shipyard in the 100 footers league. The second unit of the SW 102 series, the luxury yacht Atalante, is scheduled for launch in December 2012.
Nauta Design has developed the concept of the luxury yacht Almagores II in close cooperation with Southern Wind.
Farr Yacht Design’s naval architecture resulted in the development of new water lines, sail plan and appendages, with particular attention to the performance of the Almagores II yacht.
The SW 102 DS superyacht Almagores II combines the successful lay-out already seen on the SW 100 with the advantage of a more modern hull with a remarkable gain in the water line length of 1.35 m. This LWL increase offers significant advantages while sailing in any condition and even steaming, while the aft flatter hull bottom is a promise of higher performances and increased stability especially in reaching conditions.
Nauta has taken advantage of the increased WL and LOA lengths and the additional 21 cm of the maximum beam, to distribute these additional volumes where they were more needed.
The SW 102 yacht Almagores II is available in two versions: DS (Deck saloon) and SL (Streamline). The DS is with no doubt distinguished by the new super-structure, more spacious and bright than the 100 footer, which perfectly matches the sleek and modern lines of the hull.
The SL features the elegant Streamline superstructure profile conceived by Nauta, a kind of seamless “wave” smoothly flowing from the helm stations to the mast. The coachroof can be offered as a main glass rounded wedge laterally covered by non transparent composite stripes. As an alternative, the coachroof can be covered with teak.
The interior lay-out is the typical Southern Wind one: Crew quarters aft, guest area, including 2 double cabins and 1 queen- size bed cabin, amidship and a roomy and secluded owner’s cabin forward the mast.
The crew quarter is exceptionally wide; besides an ample and functional galley and a dedicated navigation desk, it features 3 cabins o one of which can be used as additional Junior guest cabin. Moreover great care was paid into an ergonomic study and into the optimization of spaces. The chef, the hostess/steward and the captain can work simultaneously without interference.
Southern Wind believes that comfort and user-friendly spaces contribute to the satisfaction of both crew and guests.
The owner and guests areas are proportionally functional and comfortable. Social life is encouraged not only by the spacious and stylish saloon but also by the ample guest cockpit and sun bathing area. 5 stars meals up to 10 persons can be served both inside or on deck, if necessary protected from the sun by the big sun-shade or from bad weather by the dodger. Privacy, comfort and luxury details are offered not only in the master cabin, but in the guest cabin as well.
On deck the passage from the aft section to the main companionway, has minor gaps or differences in level than in the SW 100, being therefore not only more comfortable but also safer especially in sailing conditions, as one can easily walk from the aft cockpit forward.
The aft cockpit concentrates most of the maneuvering gear, while the guest cockpit amidship guarantees the absence of nuisance to the passengers while sailing.
The equipment on board will be fitted keeping in mind the long ocean sailing which inspires Southern Wind Blue Water philosophy.
The semi-custom construction of the SW 102 DS yacht Almagores II, leaves the room open to different options for the interiors as well as for the deck lay-out. A retractable keel with a 3.20/4.80 m. stroke is being studied.
Almagores II yacht will complete her sea trials in the Table Bay waters, before leaving, in less of one mounth, South Africa to the Mediterranean. She will be officially presented as a world premiére during the forthcoming Monaco Yacht Show.
