The 10 Extreme 40 teams in the ninth Act of the global 2011 Extreme Sailing Series™ are preparing for their final showdown at the Marina Bay in Singapore between the 7th – 11th December (9, 10 and 11 December are the days open to the public). Over the five days of racing, one of the teams will become the 2011 Series champion and with just one point separating the top two teams, Luna Rossa and Groupe Edmond De Rothschild, the battle on the waters in front of the iconic Singapore skyline will certainly bring a captivating finish to the 2011 Extreme Sailing Series™.
Heading into the final act in Singapore at the top of the 2011 leaderboard and leading the Overall Championship are the Italian team of Luna Rossa. “The Luna Rossa team is really excited about heading to Singapore and the final event of the season,” said Luna Rossa helmsman Paul Campbell-James. “We’re going to have a great battle with Groupe Edmond De Rothschild. We’re guaranteed a top two result in the overall season results so it’s going to be literally a five-day match race – Italy versus France for the title. Alister [Richardson] and I were in exactly the same position against Groupe Edmond De Rothschild this time last year and we’re hoping for a similar winning result!”
Whilst these two teams will fight it out for the overall victory, four teams can still claim the 3rd spot on the podium. As ever, it’s expected to go down to the wire.
The first of the racing action will begin this Wednesday, 7th December at Marina Bay, under the iconic backdrop of the Singapore Flyer, also home to the F1’s Grand Prix pit lanes. With the Extreme Race Village at the Singapore Flyer opening to the public from Friday through to Sunday, spectators will have plenty to enjoy, with VIP Hospitality, a bouncy castle and a bungee trampoline to entertain the youngsters, a variety of bar and food outlets, numerous family activities to suit all ages, plus further entertainment, live commentary and music.
Car manufacturer Jeep, one of the event’s Local Main Partners, will also give the public an opportunity to experience a test drive in their new Cherokee model at their stand. From 3rd December, visitors to the Singapore Flyer will also be able to enter a competition where they can get the chance to win some official merchandise or the opportunity to be on board one of the boats as the 5th man and have the first-hand experience of the extreme racing.
On-water action will be complemented by the NeilPryde Racing Series which will see 20 of the best professional and amateur windsurfers, from Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia featuring alongside an exciting Moth demonstration sailing as well as Singapore’s own youth sailors racing Optimist dinghies. A live online WEBcam feed with race commentary will also be made available to viewers around the world.
In addition, the 2012 Extreme Sailing Series™ global circuit will be announced on Tuesday, 13th December, just two days after the final Act of 2011 in Singapore and coinciding with the opening day of the World Yacht Racing Forum in Estoril, Portugal. The worldwide circuit will once again span several continents as it goes in to its sixth year, with its award-winning ‘stadium racing’ format continuing to bring the sport to the public, entertaining fans in established markets and introducing the sport in countries where professional sailing is very new.
