Walcon Marine is a market leader in design construction and installation of Marinas, yacht Harbours and berthing facilities around the world. Walcon Marines experience in building floating structures of all types has gone one stage further with the creation of a floating football pitch in Australia for the Sydney International FIFA Fan Fest, which reaches its climax this week with the final of the World Cup. For a whole month, Darling Harbour, the heart of Sydney, Australia has been transformed for a continuous celebration of the World Cup complete with music, dancing and giant screens for live coverage.
The event was commissioned by Sydney City Council and sponsored by Hyundai. Adam Huie of Banks Events was responsible for the logistics and it was his organisation that tasked Walcon with the design and creation of the foundations for a floating five aside football pitch, a car display platform for Hyundai and access across the harbour to the giant floating stages. Walcon’s System 2000 pontoon design was selected for its durability and construction flexibility. The standard hardwood decking was covered with uniquely designed pine flooring covered in a synthetic grass surface.
Australia’s first floating football pitch is hosting street soccer competitions between local teams from the emergency services and other local groups as part of the program of celebrations for the World Cup. Once the World Cup is finished the floating football field will be dismantled and then reassembled to form the walkways for the Sydney International Boat Show – Australia’s biggest Boat Show, being held from 29 July to 2 August. Programmes are tight, but all involved are confident in transforming Darling Harbour from football mania to boating heaven in as little as two weeks.
