The winners of the prestigious 10th edition of the World Superyacht Awards 2015 were unveiled in Amsterdam on the evening of Saturday, May 9, 2015. During the evening, a total number of 22 coveted Neptune trophies and Judges’ Commendation prizes were presented by international broadcaster, Natasha Kaplinsky, to the owners of the best sail and motor yachts delivered in 2014.
The Motor Yacht of the Year 2015 award went to the Picchiotti-branded 73m mega yacht Grace E, built by Perini Navi Group to a design by Vitruvius Ltd and Philippe Briand, with interiors by Remi Tessier. The judges recognized an unrivalled quality of structural build, the design and installation of the mechanical elements and systems, as well as the perfection of interior joinery and decoration, in addition to her miserly fuel consumption, long range and economy of operation that is perfectly suited to the modern era.
The Sailing Yacht of the Year 2015 award was won by the 33m superyacht WinWin, constructed by Baltic Yachts and designed by Javier Jaudenes, with interior design by Design Unlimited. Built from pre-preg carbon fibre and featuring an amazingly light displacement of 77-tonnes, this lifting-keel yacht mixes up a breath-taking appearance with efficient yet extremely stylish on-deck working areas, a particularly agile performance, as well as a level of technology that allows the vessel to be readily manageable by a crew of four. In addition, she boasts highly comfortable living spaces styled in the modern idiom and an excellent build quality.
The Voyager’s Award, recognizing superyacht owners who have undertaken a passage of an unusual or exploratory nature, was handed over to Arctic P yacht. The owners of this converted tug first called in on Macquarie Island and the Balleny Islands, where they crossed into the Antarctic Circle. Their course, often in extremely rough seas, took them onwards to Victoria Land on the Antarctic mainland, skirting the ice-covered shore southwards to Ross Island. Here, they visited Scott’s base for his tragic polar expedition and Shackleton’s Hut, preserved as a monument to this intrepid Antarctic explorer, before going on to USA’s vast McMurdo Research Station. Thereafter, they skirted the 400-mile long, 50-metre high Ross Ice Shelf heading eastwards and further south towards Roosevelt Island. The highlight of their voyage came at this point when they grabbed the opportunity to take superyacht Arctic P to the most southerly location ever reached by any vessel, be it commercial, military or a yacht – an outstanding achievement that is now part of the Guinness Book of Records.
The Legacy Award 2015 winner has become Lord Irvine Laidlaw, thanks to an amazing history and collection of sailing and motor yachts. A passion for motoryachts saw Lord Laidlaw work his way through a series of increasingly large vessels such as the 23m Azimut Lady Christine yacht, a 38-metre Heesen, as well as a 56-metre Oceanco, before he built his current 68m Feadship-Van Lent mega yacht Lady Christine. He has also owned the 34-metre Sunseeker yacht Frivolous, and still owns the 40-metre Feadship charter yacht Seaflower.
