Entries for the next year’s edition of Young Designer of the Year Award are now officially open. The 2013 competition is marked by a brand new task set to unveil the industry’s up-and-coming creative talents.
This year it’s a new-build motor yacht that the Young Designers have been asked to create – a project so realistic and exciting that when the Jury read it through they not only unanimously approved it, but expressed an interest in having a shot at it themselves. However, young designers won’t have to be worry to compete against the jury as entrants must be current students or recent graduates – and all the judges have spent far too much time in the superyacht industry to meet that qualification!
THE TASK
The essence of the task is that the client – a free-thinking collector of stylish high performance cars – has chosen a builder and selected one of their existing hull designs. He is now seeking a custom-designed superstructure and interior to match his relaxed life-style. Of course, he has plenty of other demands, including a beach-club, health spa and internal storage for three tenders and a submarine.
Successful completion of the task calls for a thorough understanding of the client’s needs that are all set out in the briefing document, after which the Young Designers will need an open-minded approach to the exterior styling and interior layout of the new yacht.
THE PRIZES
As the jury has already commented, this is an interesting task whose solution will look good in the CV of any aspiring yacht designer. The winner receives a €5,000 prize, as well as the coveted golden neptune trophy at the ShowBoats Design Awards gala evening on 21 June.
Additionally, the creators of the top five entries will benefit from a host of incredible opportunities aimed at advancing their early design careers, including an all-expenses paid trip to visit a major shipyard, complimentary access to the next edition of the Superyacht Design Symposium and the opportunity to attend the prize giving ceremony at the Monaco Opera House.
HOW TO ENTER
Entries are invited from current students of yacht design and practicing yacht designers who graduated from a bachelor’s degree course (or the international equivalent) in 2011 and thereafter.
Entries are accepted from individuals or by teams of two, both of whom must meet the entry qualifications. Yacht design houses are encouraged to put forward their junior staff for the competition. Entries must be submitted by 22nd April, 2013.
